also: that scene makes it explicit that Ruka’s apartment used to be Mai’s and Rei’s, and I bet it was Mai’s initially, which is part of why Rei hallucinates being Mai while walking in the apartnment where “she lives alone” (though thankfully dream Ruka is there to disabuse her of the notion soon enough).

this feels almost worse, because Rei has been taking on other people’s trauma as a functionary for the isekai’d, and this just shows it’s a pattern she began much earlier.

Never mind: _Mai_, Reiko’s lover, was Kanako’s half-sister. Rei was dissociating in the dream, believing herself to be Mai because she was writing ‘as Mai’ in her diary as a way to keep her alive. But that didn’t happen to her, thankfully.

justice for Rei Arbaro. justice, and a good therapist.

ah, fuck, I missed that she was Kanako’s half-sister — that she left her foster family post-isekai’ing because the arrival of their biological child made her feel unwelcome. Fuck.

It’s the scene where she has the depression-caused dream where she dreams of having a dissociative episode where she literally sees her own Japanese handwriting and can’t read it, where she cannot recognize her naturalized name as hers, admits her hurt quietly.

She deserves to find happiness, to have her heart held, and to give that love and closeness she denies herself even in her thoughts. She deserves closure on how to relate to her origin, a little of which she gets in her Days Gone By scene with Kanako when she gifts her the last her-world’s-Japanese-to-Juliamo dictionary she wrote — both letting go of her last and seeding anew to let people find their feelings through those words she misses.

Reiko’s lover passed through. Reiko didn’t. She woke up months later in the hospital, her body having barely healed from being beaten by the paracausal phenomenon beyond recognition. She decided to let go of all hope, naturalize into Rei Arbaro, and take a hard, modest job help other vizitantoj acclimate.

She becomes the foster mother of Ruka when she isekais, and… the rest of the game. Rei’s always there, aloof trickster, but kind.

Rei, originally Mori Reiko, was isekai’d to this game's world like many others; found a woman there, fell in love, but that woman — despite promising each other eternal companionship — felt the gate to return to her original world open. She tried to compromise by telling Reiko that they’d go through the gate together, but unfortunately if the gate isn’t to your original world, it just fucking mangles you to bits.

or the revelation that she is writing _her lover’s_ diary, seeing the person who she saw through her eyes, putting so much of her self into this new person hoping to become something other and new than the two lives she’s already lost

bodily harm, scars (fictional)

when she tells you ‘what happened to her friend’ in the first game, you feel for her — when the eight year old kid she’s fostering comes into the restroom and sees the scars of the accident she recounted and just accepts the signs of what happened to her, “the wings of an angel”, it’s, it broke me.

‘hey, Aura, how do you feel about a game about losing your identity and culture and struggling with your gay heart through the pain, through a language barrier, to find a little happiness’ ‘guess'

Perhaps reconsidering right now the idea of playing a game where an undiagnosed ADHD protagonist messes up her relationships because of her inability to pay attention on this specific day
